Classical new releases @ KWUR, Dec. 2010-Jan. 2011

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

Exceptionally late (not that anyone noticed), but since KWUR is the last bastion of St. Louis-based, locally hosted classical radio which features new releases. I do need to do better on keeping new release blog posts updated.  With that said, this past December and January were relatively light months for new classical CD arrivals, namely:

1.  Régards sur l'Espange (Reflections on Spain), music of Ernesto Lecuona, José Evangelista, Albéniz, Mompou, Debussy, Tomás Marco, and Turina; Louise Bessette, piano (Analekta AN 2 9963)

2. Brahms: Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, op. 24; Two Rhapsodies, op. 79; Six Piano Pieces, op. 118; Four Piano Pieces, op. 119; Murray Perahia, piano (Sony Classical 88697794692)

3. Matthias Goerne Schubert Edition, Vol. 5, "Nacht und Träume" (selected Lieder): Matthias Goerne, baritone; Alexander Schmalcz, piano (harmonia mundi HMC 902063)

4. Smetana: Piano Trio; Liszt: TristiaÉlégie No. 1, La lugubre gondole, Romance oubliée, Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth; Trio Wanderer (harmonia mundi HMC 902060)

The February list promises to be really out of control, in a good way.  Thanks for reading.

Local Bands of the Week February 16-23

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

The most-played local bands on KWUR this week were:

  1. Cassie Morgan & the Lonely Pine
  2. Grace Basement
  3. Spelling Bee
  4. Gentleman Auction House
  5. The Hooten Hallers

And while I'm doling out well-earned props, I'd like to call attention to acclaimed blues trio Rum Drum Ramblers, who are playing a record release show at Off Broadway on Thursday, February 24 with Carbondale's own punkgrass outfit Whistle Pigs. Fans of Pokey LaFarge will be especially interested in checking out the show–Rum Drum and the South City Three share harmonica and bass talent. You should go!

Show Selector, Vol 1

Monday, February 21st, 2011

KWUR Week is over, we had a blast, but there are so many other great shows coming up in the next few months!  In fact, this is turning out to be a banner semester for concerts in St. Louis, and you really don't have an excuse to miss some of the awesome live music that's coming our way (unless you hate live music, but if that's the case, you're probably not reading this).  Anyway, here are a few shows that I think will be excellent and that you should attend.  Remember folks, it's a positive feedback loop: if more people go to shows, more bands will want to come play here.  YOU can make a difference, and probably get drunk while doing it.

Stuff you may not know about KWUR Week Electronica Artists

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

So as everyone knows, I am thrilled about all the people who are coming to KWUR Week. Three Oh Sees are great and I love listening to Flaming Death Trap's stack session during my show. But I wanted to bring some attention to the main Electronica artists: Paper Diamond and Robotic Pirate Monkey. I feel (looking at the cd's) that while all DJ's are playing music from Pokey LaFarge and Fergus and Geronimo, many of you have no idea who these people/ artists are. So here is a bit more info that maybe you can use on your show or even download (for free) some of their music and play it.
